Can I use my magnetic tankbag?
Hi all,
I've purchased an 09 r1200gs sight as-yet unseen off the Internets and I have what could be the dumbest question yet posed on here: Can I use a magnetic bag on these bikes or are they strap-only? thanks rob

The GS I have has plastic panels covering the tank. I don't even know if the tank underneath is still metal.

A magnetic tankbag won't work on an R1200GS since, as previously indicated, not only are the panels which cover the tank made from plastic but the tank itself is also plastic.
If it's a tankbag which comes in both magnetic and strap-on variants, you may be able to buy a strap-on tankpad to which you can attach the bag.

I've been thinking about attaching thin sheets of metal to the under/inside of the body panels so I can use magnetic tank bags. Has anybody ever tried to do this kind of thing?
Having ridden metal-tanked bikes for a LONG time, I have a nice collection of various tank bags & map cases - but they're all magnetic. It would be nice to be able to use them on my new, plastic-topped bikes. --chiba
