Default Pelican Case instead of traditional Top Case?

I read a great post on how to mount a Pelican case on a 1200GS. The application was necessary to carry a valuable camera and laptop. My question, after considering the pricey Touratech and Jesse top cases is why wouldn't retrofitting a Pelican Case (or similar product) be more common -in place of these pricey products mentioned above? They are as rugged, (maybe more) waterproof and cost 1/3 the price.
I'm fairly new to motorcycle touring so if I'm missing something, please let me know. This application seems to get me a durable top case to use for luggage at a fraction of the cost of traditional luggage.

Do people do this? If so, can it be mounted on a 'rear mount' instead of the 'solo mount'?

Thanks

The issue with Pelican cases is storage space. The internal size is quite a bit smaller than the external size. If you can live with the reduced storage space then they are hard to beat.

To a smaller extent that is the issue with the BMW vario cases. They are smaller inside than outside... and they don't have the advantage of being nearly as strong as the Pelican cases.

I run a pelican 1510. Awesome. I hauled my laptop (17") 3300 miles of rough road and Florida monsoon.

I have the foam in for the computer no foam otherwise. The way mine is set it sits quite aft so I don't want a massive volume box.

I use a 1520 as a top case with givi 41's on the sides.no issues at all. Plenty of room. I have removed the pillion seat and use a cortech bag mounted vertically and it doubles as a back rest.
