Default Odyssey battery in a 1200GS?

Hey, has anyone figured out how to install an Odyssey PC680 battery into our lovely 1200's? As part of its rapid weight-loss plan for the GS, BMW has shrunken the battery and its compartment. The bummer is that the superior batteries by Odyssey no longer fit

A 535 is reported to fit with some modifications to the battery case.

Talking Thanks for Odyssey battery pointer

Hey thanks Marc! Truth is that I did actually troll the ADVRider site for this info but must not have used the right search parameters. I even talked to the Odyssey folks (Enersys) and they had no words of wisdom. I think I'm going to send them the link so that they can see that they have a battery in hand that just needs some minor doctoring to fit the 1200 series that they dropped the ball on....

Default My 2 cents worth...

I have had a PC-535 in my 12GS for about 3 months now, and the results are very good. No boosting required, even after sitting for a couple of weeks.
Despite having some alternate thoughts, I wound up installing it much the same way that JVB did in the above link, the only difference being I didn't shave the fins on the battery like he did.
I got mine from Battery Mart and was happy with the price and delivery. Good luck in your quest...

I'm too going to replace my weak BMW battery, does anybody know if the BMW charger can be used with the Odyssey battery?

Default I did the 535 farkle over the weekend

I put an Odyssey 535 in my 1200GS over the weekend and it is working fine. I did have to re-form the connection eyelets to fit well but that was just a little work with vise grips and pliers.

I have noticed that the BMW charger is a bit confused by the new battery. Sometimes it thinks everything is fine, sometimes it thinks it has to desulphate, sometimes it charges at half power. I'll probably get a Battery Minder charger out and just wire an accessory outlet directly to the battery (well, with a fuse in line, of course) and forget about the BMW CANbus charging system.

Depends. For normal use, yes. It will *almost* fully charge the odyssey just as the charging system on your bike will *almost* fully charget the odyssey. The difference between *almost* full and full are small enough in practice that you don't care.

However, if you ever fully discharge the Odyssey it wants a lot of current (6 amps, I think) to bring the battery back to life. Lots of info on the Odyssey site.

Default Easy...

Wunderlich sells a kit with battery, new clamp, etc. to fit an Odyssey PC535 in the R12.

Cheers!

Guys, the Odyssey batteries are a pretty good option/alternative, I find.

New here. I recently ponied up for one here. They have been very very good to me thus far!

Keepin' it comin, as they say, at www.batterytex.com. I mean, that's not their motto I don't think, but I like it.
