Default Exhaust Silencing for 2011 R1200 GS

Hi to all. I am Rick from northeast Nevada and have just joined the forum. I'm new to the GS but have fallen in love with it in no time. I just got a 2011 R1200GS after owning an F650 GS for a full two months. I loved everything about the 650 but I'm a big guy and feel it needed a bit more juice at cruising speeds. The one thing I liked more about the 650 than my 1200 was the quiet exhaust system. Call me crazy but I got over the thrill of the new flapper exhaust of my new ride in about 1 day. Does anyone have experience with putting a quiet system on this model and will it affect engine tuning? Thanks.

I have same idea. Used to have 2003 R1150GS with stock exhaust and it was much quieter then my new 2010 R1200GSA.

I ride with earplugs as I don't like hearing that boxer engine. It always sounds as if it is falling apart ... the exhaust I don't hear all too much either with the plugs in.

It was true for 1150 and earlier 1200. DOH engine does not make that many weird sounds as old ones ( at least while it new)

You should ride with earplugs anyway if you don't want to damage your hearing.

Here's a thought: My 2004/5 GS is supposedly quieter than the DOHC Model - why not fit a Can from an earlier GS? They are supposed to be amongst the most efficient cans anyway.... and are quite cheap on fleabay.

In 1150 big role in silencing played catalytic converter (big can under transmission), DOHC has catalytic converter built into muffler - installing 1150 muffler will not help.

For me, it sounds like my 2010 engine is falling apart. Might be just me as my BMW shop says everything is fine with the bike.

You know, I often enough sit with earplugs in the office because I don't like to hear all the noise ... and my hearing is valuable to me.
