Because breathing hasn't been shown to be an issue on an otherwise stock bike. First remove the cat and change pipes and then maybe breathing will be an issue. But be prepared to re-work the snorkel and air box to see any real improvement.

Some folks take their GS on dusty dirt roads where keeping the dirt out is more important than a few more theoretical horsepower at RPMs that will never be seen on dirt roads. That big bit of orange is part of the gasket that keeps out dirt.

My next filter change will see a UNI oiled foam filter installed to help keep out that fine dust that gets sucked when I have the bad luck to be following instead of leading on some of those dusty dirt roads.

go to K&N.com and you can find a K&N Wasable/reuseable air filter!! I have one on every bike I own take it out every 10K mi I wash it in simple green full strength rinse let it dry squirt with K&N filter oil and put it back in Works fine lasts a long time, Initally a little more expensive than a paper filter but you can use it over and over so in the long haul it is actually cheaper!!!! FWIW
