Default Removing The Alternator Cover

Just attempted to remove the alternator belt cover, and just could not get the thing off. It gets stuck on the top pulley wheel, and there doesn't seem to be enough room behind the front shock for it to move forward enough to come clear of the top pulley wheel.

Will it come off with the shock in place ?? My bike is a 2006 Adventure.

Cheers

Andy

It better come off with the shock in place as, at least on my standard GS with Ohlins shocks, the cover has to come off in order to remove the shock.

On the standard GS I remove the cover by first removing the 5 screws and then pop the cover out a few mm and rotate the cover by pulling the bottom of the cover to the left side of the bike a little bit. Then I'm able to pull it down and out. I don't know if the Adventure will work the same way.

I had the same problem. I loosened the bottom of the front shock and moved it forward. The the front forks dropped a little but this little amount of room created was all I needed to remove the cover.
Heat the bottom shock bolt before removal....factory thread locker on the bolt. Heat will soften up the thread locker, and thus prevent damage to the threads as the bolt is removed.

I had to remove the alternator cover when I did my shocks. I remember that I already had the shock bolts removed when I did it and the cover basically fell right off.

Speaking of shocks, after I replaced my OEM shocks with OEM shocks, the bike rides so much smoother and sits higher. I was always afraid that the bike would tip over on the high side while it was on the kickstand and wondered why people would buy those kickstand plates. Now I know. The old shocks had 32k miles on them.

Default It's not that easy

Hello Andy

I had to remove my Altenator as well, I did not think moving the front shock would do the trick, bugger of a job, in the end I had to remove the subframe linking the shock to the tubular frame.

A word of extreme caution, spray up all the screws and bolts and leave sit for a day then spray before you go at them again, then spray again and hit each one with a hammer, I had the misfortune of shearing off the lower bolt holding the subframe to the tubular frame, and to drill it out and thread tap the hole.

Also spray up the 3 bolts holding the altenator in place and the screw for the positive lead to the battery, mine also broke off.

And to add insult to injury my altenator was not my problem, I have a electricity leak somewhere else.n still looking.

One big issue I have with these bikes is the mix of metals bolted to each other, which then rust in to place.

Cheers
David

If I can be of any further assistance please let me know
