Default handlebar play on 09 GS

earlier today i noticed a bit of play in my handlebars. The bike was on its centerstand at the time. When standing on one side of the bike I can provoke a sort of small clicking motion when pushing the end of the handle up and down.

Its nothing much.. I can see the inner tubes going up and down only a few milimetres inside the outer tubes.

I havnt felt anything when riding the bike but still it would be nice to see if this is normal or not?

How can I tighten it up if needed ?

thanks in advance

..a few hours later after some work is done.. I've found more info on the subject including a post on advrider where a few other guys speak of the same issue and claims its pretty normal.

Now the only thing that remains is my own opinion on the so called play. Normal or not I'm not a fan!

If nothing can be done about it I will have to just suck it up and live with it but to be honest I was hoping something could be tightened up to eliminate it or just minimize it.

Anyone with some tips or tricks?

Don't sound normal does it! My 09 GSA doesn't have that problem, this is on the 1200GS or the 800GS?

Where is the noise coming from? The fork? Both left and right? The lower ball joint? The telelever A arm? The shock?

I've had my shock off for replacement several times but have otherwise never been into my forks. I am not speaking from any expertise or experience, just being curious. My '05 doesn't make any noise with its after market shock.

Quanto.. its the 09 1200 GS so its from a telelever front end. Sorry I didnt point that out from the beginning.

Marc.. its not an issue of noise. Its more an issue of play with the top yoke so when i pull up and down in one side of the handlebar I can feel it rocking slightly from side to side. If i do this while looking at the innertubes i can see them moving approx 2mm in and out the outer tubes of the telelever just to get a measure as to how much this play is.

as discussed here too: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...php?p=15527416

Im not at all feeling insecure with the front end of the bike, but still.. I think I'd sleep a bit better at night if I could eliminate that play

I see. I can get a hint of such movement if I apply a lot of pressure on one of the handle bars. A also see from the parts list that there is a slight difference between my '05 and your '09.

The '09 is on the right. The bearing in an angular contact ball bearing that has to have wiggle room since with the telelever the angle changes as the forks compress. I wonder if that is what you are feeling. The bearing seems to be the same between the '05 and the '09.

thanks for your effort Marc, really appreciated.

To be honest comparing the two parts views didnt make me any wiser, but I think you may be on to something when saying the changing angle could be related to the wiggle in the bearing.

As I dont feel the play much I guess I could just leave it be.. but honestly.. its annoying me. Only good thing is that I see other people reporting the same thing- but still I would like to know if i could reduce it or right out eliminate the play.

I'm having the day off tomorrow so I'm planning on picking up the phone and gettin in touch with some BMW dealers in my area. If anything useful comes out of it I'll be keeping u all in touch in here

thanks for your input on this subject
