Red face Smoking GS

I have a 2010 GS with 11,000k on the clock, on 2 occassions now after having riden the bike and let it stand for an hour or so, it smokes badly on restarting. The bike fires up and runs fine but a very noticable amount of whitish smoke come from the exhaust and stops after 30 seconds or so. Any ideas?

Default lots of follow up questions...

Are you parking the bike on the sidestand or the centerstand? Does it smoke if it is on the centerstand? Is your oil over filled?

If your oil is over filled and you park on the side stand you might have oil getting past the rings into the downhill upper piston area.

If that's not the case it might be a valve guide leaking down, although I would expect the smoke to be more continuous.

Guess I'd check the sump first.

If it were mine I would ask desler to fix while still on warranty. Make sure you did not overfill with oil. Ir worse yet run low. Any problem with oil/ smoke could Be sign of ring seating problem which could get worse.

Now this one is excessive, the OP's is normal for any cylinder that sits downhill from the oil, even if the oil level is below the cylinder. There will be oil on the cylinder wall after shutdown that will run to the rings and will eventually find their way through the ring gaps. Quicker if they are all lined up on the bottom. BMW pinned the rings on the K models to prevent the rings from lining up, I don't know if they have done that on the R bikes. If I leave my K on it's side stand over night or a day or two sometimes it will smoke sometimes it won't, nothing to worry about. Now your oil consumption is.

You'll burn off oil (and go through it pretty quickly) if you park it on the sidestand - particularly after its run for a while when parked. If you don't want to fly through oil, put it on the center stand. At least with my '11 - it certainly went through oil like GSes are normally supposed to but when I started leaving it on the sidestand during the day I started going through oil way faster (with quite noticeable burn off on start occasionally).
