Exclamation Brake Failure Warning Light

Hi,
My local bikeshop has fitted a new rear caliper to my 2004 GS. All is running fine now but he could not turn off the "Brake Failure" warning signal on the dash. Is there a trick to fix this or do I need to go to a Dealer?

Default the brake failure light is a self diagnostic warning

Does your bike have ABS? If the caliper replacement was done correctly then the warning light should go out (on an ABS bike) once the bike has been started and is rolling forward a few meters under power. This gives the ABS sensors time to decide if they are sensing both wheels turning.

If your bike has the servo power brake system then the brake bleeding process is rather complicated (but not difficult, just a lot of work). It involves removing the gas tank. If that wasn't done correctly then the failure light will stay on.

There is a procedure posted that you can find here. I've used it and it works.

Was the shop a BMW dealer? If not they might have missed bleeding the new caliper correctly.

Default thank you

I live in a country town, 130 kilometres from a BMW Dealer. My local Suzuki Dealer is good but I always go to a BMW dealer for servicing etc. In this case that was impossible without a bike trailer. The chief mechanic rode the bike home for me and said all tested ok. He said it was a diagnostic problem that he did not have the tool/technology to fix. I think I will book the bike in for attention at my BMW Dealer. Thank you once again for your reply and I believe accurate assessment.

Thumbs up Fault codes reset

The fault codes have to be reset by the computereither at a BMW dealer, or A GS-911 plugged into the bikes data port under the seat and hooked up to a notebook computer can do this but they are kind of pricey @$350.00 I bought one for a recurring brake fault light on my '08 K1200GT which turned out to be a broken sensor wire coming from the front caliper. I cut the wire soldered it together and eliminated this sensor system which was subsequently dropped on later models because of a lot of problems/Unreliability with it!! it is not difficult to periodically check the brake pads for Wear!!
