Default 2006 R12 FD Clunk

I've got a 55000mi old gs and when I go from on to off throttle at parking lot speeds I hear a clunk in the rear end. It's probably there at highway speeds but I can't hear it. I'm new to the bike so I don't know how long it's done it. Does that sound normal? Should I be nervous?

Perhaps I'm asking the wrong question?

If I put the bike in first gear on the center stand, and rock the back wheel forward and backward, how much free play should there be?

Don't know if there is any spec. FWIW I've got about 3 1/2" of play measured along the circumference of the tire.

Yah that's the kind of movement I'm getting, like 3".
Seems way to much to me but I guess it's right.
It is quite a clunk on and off the gas.
I've started using more clutch to try and quiet id town at slow speed.
Thanks
