Question Hyperlites on top-box

I have just finished mounting Hyperlites on my GS.
I pondered just where to mount them to give the best visibility with the least risk of damage and decided to attach them to my top-box (which I have permanently mounted).

What do others think?

Talking Some pics...

Turn the top box downside-up...
Note the convenient L-shaped corner mouldings in base, about 33cm (13") apart, almost on the edge of the step in the base.

Use either 25mm(1") angle or 19mm(3/4") square tube trimmed to fit - don't forget to allow space for the end-caps if using tube

NB: 25mm (1") tube will NOT work as it fouls the mounting plate on the bike.

Drill 4 holes clean through tube and top-box floor for fixing. Drill two holes to rear for Hyperlites wiring and one hole forwards for connector
(DON'T DRILL ON CENTRE LINE OF THE BOX AS I DID - IT FOULS THE CATCH !!)

Spray paint the drilled tube + 5off 6x30mm machine screws to match. (1 for spare)

Glue Hyperlites to tube, wire through tube to connector.
Fit to top-box with fender washers inside top-box.

Finished top-box:

Do wiring on bike as per Hyperlites instruction pack.
Take wire up RH top box brace to connector
(AGAIN - NOT ON THE CENTRE LINE - for obvious reasons!)

Refit the top box, connect the wires and VOILA!

Thumbs up

Good job documenting the install! Which hyperlite kit did you use for the install?

Flashing LED lights at cage level seems like a good idea.

Cool Hyperlites

I used the dedicated BMW kit:
"R1200 GSII two 16 LED modules and flasher" (currently $80-40??)

I had enough slack in the wires to turn the connector sideways, so it doesn't foul the catch, but it was the only real error in the design. I also mounted the Hyperlites just a tad too close to the ends of the tube so I had to file off 3mm of the L-shaped locating points, but what's a bit of plastic between friends...

I believe that this mod (without the Hyperlites) could also strengthen the top-box catch and help to prevent it popping off - you can see the plastic cracked though in the area of the catch on photo 1. I have mine permanently mounted using two 6x35 Allenhead bolts through the other two holes visible in the top-box interior photo.

Regarding the two bolt holes for permanent retention to the base plate, I thought that's why those two extra holes were drilled in your box. You're right about the square tubing reinforcing the box.
