In December's issue of BMW ON. The J&M CB is mentioned twice in the "R1200GS accessories wish list".
Anybody here using this unit on their GS? Where are you mounting the antenna? I see they have some license plate mounting brackets. Got a pic to share? I've been considering this unit, or a Kenwood FRS/GMRS. Just need it for B2B communications with my wife. The J&M CB seems nice but can't get over having an antenna mounted to my bike and what that will look like. Whereas the Kenwwod are more compact and can be concealed better, as in no whip antenna mounted to the bike. |

hey there. i've installed the J&M CB units on several bikes and am getting ready to do another on a r1200gs adventure. i like the unit more than anything else out there. the ability to play music/phone/gps all from the one system makes it a great accessory. the cb antenna hangs off the rear but how ugly it looks depends on the size - 2', 3' or 4'. i've installed the 2' whip and it looks fine, just rising above the top case. i'm installing a 4' whip next because of the icreased range and i expect it to be obvious.
these bikes are for fuction ..... so i make them even more functional. later roger |

Hey...thanks Roger. I like their units also for the same reasons. I was thinking of the 1' whip. I really only need the capabalilty for B2B, I dont anticipate being too far from each other; no more than a couple hunerd yards at the most. You think the 1' whip would be sufficient?
Hey John... If you go to their website, you can see the antenna mounts off of the rear license plate bracket: http://www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=24 |

hey there. i do not think a 1' whip would work - it may not be tall enough to get above the bike and the metal at the rear. i am using a 2' whip and have 0.5 mile reception with NO problems. i feel like a lurker on the highway as i cannot hear all of the conversation as i pass in and out of reception quickly. when i need to talk, i find a truck and use him to get to the other rigs. seems to work better and is a lot nicer looking than a 4' antenna.
as far as the brackets for the cb control unit, i made mine, another was custom made before i got there and this one for the r1200gs is factory. the antenna mounts are factory, bend them or cut them as needed. brackets are cheap to make and easy if you use thin guage metal. the factory brackets are 3x thicker than my custom bracket and i have never had any problems with either. later roger |

Give Tom Dowell at Excel Cycle a shout for the bracket to hold the unit on the bike. He machined a very nice unit from stainless for me and now has the template to make others. His # is 309-244-7405. He also makes several accessories for the 1200GS.
