This is is the basic cardboard box that started it all off... (about 7,5lt = 2 gal)
![]() I refined it to take this shape...(load bed omitted): (about 10lt = 3 gal) ![]() The maximum tank I'd consider with filler on the top RH side of the bike - highest point when on side-stand: (about 15lt = 4gal) ![]() The problem: The BMW seat base is a complex curve for-and-aft and side-to-side... ![]() Ideas...? Have someone fabricate the shape you want and mount it to a Jesse plate. Done. You should be high enough that gravity takes over, but I felt that I wanted to boost it up a little to make sure there was enough height.
When you say the "Australian Company", do you mean the tourtank? The one that looks like a little keg? There are people who have put them on a GS. There's a guy on ADV goes by John something. Johnboy maybe? |

There are several aux fuel threads on the forum in the last
year...just use "fuel tank" in search and you should get most of them. I like your cardboard patterns. For the complex curve you might want to check with a hi quality auto body shop that has a "english wheel". These guys are artists at hand forming complex curves in steel or aluminum. |

I've been away from this forum a bit...
BB, that looks great! I would like to retain the OEM topbox for personal reasons, but something like your setup is what I'm looking for. How do feed the fuel line into the gas tank - an extra connection in the plastic side plate? (Thanks for the PM) Last edited by Fudmucker; 25-Mar-2010 at 11:41 AM (695). |

My bike is a 08, the pump plate is on left top front lobe of the tank. I think, from 05 to 07 the pump plate is low on the right side. But if you look close at the photo, the cargo plate I mounted it to sits about 1 1/2 inches above the plastic of the bike. I had to do this to make room for the backrest mount for the wife, that I leave mounted on the plastic BMW cargo rack on the back.. With that said, believe it or not! This tank gravity flows the whole 4.5 gallons to the main tank! I went from 165-175 miles until the reserve lite came on at about 40 miles. WAIT! WAIT! To 360 miles until the reserve lite at 40 miles. The 16 by 24 inch cargo deck has about 3 inch lip around the sides and end so mounting a top box or something shouldn't be a problem. It goes on and off just like the rear seat, the only thing different is you need to open the quick-disconnect on the fuel line. I'm going to make a couple, and hit a few rallies. If everthing I read is true, alot of guys are very unhappy with the miles per tank. I know, I was VERY UNHAPPY about it! |

Details of adding (2) 2 Gallon RotoPax for trip to Prudhoe Bay, June, 2010. With the 'handle extension'...you can mount 1 OR 2 paxs, based on your needs. I plan on carrying the second pax in the Northface Duffel (15" round x 28" long) until I reach Fairbanks where I'll fill BOTH of the pax. Gives a total of 5.3+4.0=9.3 gallons * 50 mpg = 465 mile range. Last edited by RMWBMW; 25-Mar-2010 at 09:46 AM (615). |

BB's tank has got me wondering why I'm trying to work around the standard plastic grab-rail bracket...? It would be far simpler to design a tank that mounts in place instead of the bracket and then to secure the top-box mounting plate to the tank.
Back to cardboard modeling...!
