Default 40 channel install

Has anyone installed a CB radio or any other communication device? I am told that you must do the electrical hook up into the can-bus system. As I understand, if you bypass the can-bus and use a relay to the battery, there is a lot of electrical interference, alternator or ignition noise. This will possibly cause a communication device to work poorly or even be unuseable. I also have a Zumo 550 that I will eventually want to add onto the bike. Some of these communication devices also have XM or other radio features, and again this can be a problem.
Bike is a 2008 R1200GS.

Please let me know.

Dave

I can't help you much with the CB installation query - there's not much call for those things here in UK nowadays. However, I'd imagine that you could overcome the alternator noise with some hum loop isolation circuitry. I guess a trip to Radio Shack might provide the answer.

As for installing the Zumo, you'll find a dedicated GPS power supply socket, attached to a flying lead which is tied and/or taped up somewhere around the rear of the oil cooler. I needs a BMW lead to mate with your Zumo. If you can't source the required lead, some BMW dealerships can be persuaded to supply you with the required plug to enable you to make up your own lead, although it's not listed as a retail part.

You were told wrong. The CAN-bus is a communications system. It is used to let various automotive and motorcycle electronic controllers to talk to each other. Read about it here [otl article].

The CB will connect to the battery for power. You will likely need power line filtering of one form or another to get ride of common mode ignition noise. You might also need some antenna filters (I'd probably use a band pass filter). Anyone with experience in hooking up radios to bikes will know what to do.

Default CB install

Thanks for the input. Many of the people I ride with have CB's for communication so this is the reason for the choice versus other bike to bike devices.
Thanks
