Yes, I had a Laminar Lip on the screen of my '04 which I then transferred to my '07. On both bikes, I also fitted Adventure winglets. This was an effective combination and helped to reduce the buffeting and quelled the vibrating peak on my Arai XD quite significantly.
I picked up my Lip from the Laminar Lip shop in Santa Ana while we were in California on vacation - good guys to deal with.

Schtum,
Thanks for the reply. I've done bit of research and most of the comments were positive. The one thing that was mentioned was about the top of the shield vibrating due to the additional wait. Did you have any problem with that? It looks like you have the low seat. I'm 5' 6" and have the lower suspension and seat. How far above the stock shield do you have the lip set? I've discovered that if I dip my head just a little, it gets nice and quiet. That could be a big help on a long ride. That sounds like the thing you cured with the lip. Mick |

I'm 5' 9" with a 30" inseam. I set the Laminar Lip with the top edge of the screen about halfway up the Lip which is roughly what the Laminar Lip guys suggest. I found it would have been a bit better mounted slightly higher; however, it would then have cut right across my line of sight. I had it on my two previous GSes but haven't fitted it nor the winglets on my '09 bike. If you're fitting a Lip, I'd recommend going for the Adventure winglets as well.
I didn't have any issues with the screen vibrating but then I had a Motorrad Concepts (sadly now gone bust) GPS mount which braced the screen. IF you need something like that, do a search for Alder Enterprises. Their GPS mount incorporates an adjustable screen brace or they sell the screen brace part separately. (Disclaimer - in the interests of transparency, Alder Enterprises is operated by a friend of mine but I have no financial interest in the company.) Here's another pic that maybe shows the mounting position of my lip a bit more clearly.

I have the Laminar Lip on my 07 GSA, (GSA has a taller windshield) works great. I purchased the bike used and the original owner was 6'6", I'm 6'1". The windshield is tilted back somewhat and the air flows about 2" over my helmet, I've never changed the position of the windshield as it works so well where it at. What was funny when I picked up the bike the owner moved the windshield back a couple of clicks and said that should work for your height.

Hiya, I've only recently purchased a bmw r1200gs but had an F650GS twin until last week on which I installed a laminar lip on the 'tall' stock windshield. I too positioned the top of the stock windshield at about the mid-point of the laminar lip...I am about 5' 11" and like to look over the top of the windshield- the advantage is that the top of the laminar lip can be below your line of vision, but it redirects the wind (and even small insects or light debris over the top of the helmet....I felt a great deal of pressure on the helmet without it- installing it created a bubble of calm air behind (and above) the top of the windshield- a real improvement. I have another on order now for the new bike. A word of advice- follow the instructions carefully- use the alcohol wipes to remove any hint of wax on the windshield...don't install the adhesive grips if it is cold- a warm windshield seems to take the adhesive more effectively...Overall a great improvement and a very reasonable price point.

I have an 08 GS with the standard windscreen and the lip looks like a good option. One question...how do you clean the area between the original screen and the lip? Are the lips adjustable or once you've stuck it on...you are stuck with the location?

I can't (yet) say for certain with respect to the space for cleaning between the Laminar Lip and stock windshield of the R1200GS I just bought but when I had a laminar lip on my F650GS twin, you could get a microfibre cloth in between the stock windshield and the back of the laminar lip to clean. the LL is affixed to your stock windshield using 4 interlocking adhesive 'buttons' that glue to your properly cleaned stock windshield and the back of the LL. The buttons on each unit then seem to be able to be separated a type of industrial-strength velcro-type join that allows you to pry the two sides of the button apart and remove the LL from the windshield (although the adhesive 'buttons' stay affixed to each of the two windshields). I never tried prying apart the front and back of the adhesive buttons- they look super strong....
Update- just installed the laminar lip on my stock R1200GS windshield and have taken it for a drive on highway- as I experienced on the F650GS twin, the addition of the laminar lip really reduces the windblast on the head/helmet. I can still look over the top of the LL, but the pressure on the head, neck and shoulders is substantially less....I'm now starting to experiment with adjusting the windshield to see how angle of attack improves or retards the effect of the LL. Overall, this is a very cost-effective improvement to long distance comfort.... Last edited by Windfall; 02-May-2012 at 04:41 AM (404). Reason: Update |
