Default Extra crash bars. Necessary?

I found these on ebay today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ht_1092wt_1167

Are they really necessary? has anyone had any experiences with damaged cylinder heads after the bike has gone down?

Probably 90 per cent of owners put on extra cyclinder head
protection by way of "crash bars". There is a lot of info
available on what is available. The installation is not always simple,
I would look around before I jumped on the Flea.

The extensions you posted are for adding Hepco-Becker/Touratech like bottom protection to the stock BMW bars. Need is debatable. The need for any crash bars is debatable. Without them valve cover damage (not cylinder or cylinder head) is more likely in a get off. If you hit something hard enough to damage the cylinder or cylinder head it is quite unlikely that you will ride the bike afterwards. You'll be lucky you don't get an ambulance ride as a result of a crash that does that kind of damage.

Anyway, we're talking about crash bars for valve cover protection. Valve covers aren't all that expensive. The issue is will you grind a hole in the cover? But even with crash bars you can hit a rock and put a hole in the cover.

I put the HB crash bars on my bike because I liked that extra bit of protection. I also carry some JB Stik just in case. The crash bars work.

Notice which part of my bars hit the ground on that low side crash.

Thanks for the input. I'll likely opt for the bars. A little more protection can possibly hurt...

Thumbs up Adventure Designs Bars!

Good day!
I have a set of those installed on my bike! They are made by Adventure Designs. I saw them on ebay also at first, but I ordered them over the phone!
They are very well made and they look like original equipement!
I have read that the valve covers protectors that come with the GSA will protect the covers fully with the rubber inset that are against the valve covers!
I had a set of HB on my 08 gs and i thought they look great, so i bought these for an extra protection with a better look!
Droped the fully loaded bike with them on, a couple weeks ago, and they proved themself!
The one thing i would advise you is where they are attached to theframe on the bottom, they use a sleeve that you have to pound in, for an attachement point! Make sure to follow the intruction properly on this part, if it goes in croocked it could give you some grief! And if you need to take the bolt behind that sleeve in the future, you will have a chalenge! This being said, i still love the bars and would buy them again!!!
Wunderlich also makes a simmilar set!

Default HP crash bars, valve cover and highway pegs

2007 R1200GS
I have HB crash bars, Machinaart valve cover guards and Rivco highway pegs on my GS. Everything seems to fit well and the pegs really help on on the long trips. Ideally I would love to have some offset pegs but I can't seem to find them in black. Im tired of chrome. The pegs fold up for short trips or space in the garage.

Default crash bars

Last summer I dropped my GS. I stopped on uneven pavement and by the time I realized the right side of the pavement was 3 inches lower than the left the big GS fell over. It rolled over past level scratching the HB crash bar but it never hit the valve cover guard. It made me wonder why I have one. The highway peg however did take a hit and had to be replaced. Maybe the highway peg kept the valve cover guard from getting hit.
