Smile Micatech side bags and drivers seat

I recently installed a set of Micatech side bags and discovered that on my r1200gs 2007 with the left bag on there is not enough clearance to insert the key to unlock the drivers seat. The left bag must be completely backed of the bullets to make enough room to use the key. This is no big deal but is worth reporting for those riders who keep insurance papers, maps etc. under the seat for easy access; a plan B is needed if you install Micatech bags. Maybe other luggage systems present the same problem. Take care. Lugnut

I have to open the lid on my Jesse Odyssey bags to insert the key.

I have the same issue with the Jesse, but it is no big deal. Just open the lid.

A guy over on the ADV forum rigged a wire from the release hook to the underside of the fender. Just tug the wire and the seat releases.

A possible plan B: http://www.snafu.org/pics/r1200gs/grifter/

Also, this is not an issue with Touratech Zega cases.

+1 on the neat license plate storage box. I bought mine from Riderwearhouse.com (Aerostich). In my case the biggest benefit is that I can quickly get to my paperwork.

I got stopped in Colorado a couple years ago, and had to literally unpack everything on the bike before I found the papers. The sherrif was very understanding, and even let me off with a warning.

I had one on my KLR!

Nice place to keep papers, and to store your wallet while on the beach!

Wink Solution for seat accesss with Micatech cases

Hey Lugnut,

I recently installed a set of Micatech cases too. I had read about the inability to access the seat lock with the left bag in place. I ended up inserting the plastic copy of my key that came with the bike in the seat lock before installing the case. The key cannot be removed from the lock without removing the case, and the key works fine to activate the seat lock. Yes, anyone could unlock my seat if they wanted to. I do keep my papers and a few tools under the seat, but I figure that's not really what a thief is looking for.

But that key will start the bike won't it? Why would they take the papers when they could have the whole bike?

Default Plastic key

I've been told that the plastic key will not start the bike. The ignition requires the factory BMW metal key (probably something in the head of the key). However, I have not tested this myself. More importantly, the plastic key in my seat lock cannot be removed without removing the case. And, as this thread indicates it's anything but easy to remove the case. You can also lock the case lid, making it a bit more difficult to remove the case.

You were told something that is untrue.
