Default Beak Extension - why?

What's the purpose for a beak extension? Is there a functional reason, or is just cosmetic?

About the closest I was ever able to find to a function was that it prevented stone chipping to the paint on the beak. BTW, if you're going to purchase one I found that buying an OEM Adventure beak extension from my local BMW Motorrad dealer was much cheaper than a Touratech or similar one.

I think that's stretching a bit to find some function.

I'm amazed that a part from BMW would be less expensive - thank you for sharing that.

I suppose the beak extension, like just about any other farkle, could be said to reduce fuel consumption by lightening the rider's wallet.

Nice try but ISTR mine, when I had one on my old '07 GS, cost in the region of what is currently $35.00 US and it certainly weighs a bit more than seven $5 bills. It probably increases fuel consumption by increasing the aerodynamic drag of the beak.....just a wee bit.

Here you go - stripped down '07 GS with Adventure beak extension and son on board.

Excepting the windshield, that bike looks just like mine. Oh, and the beak extension... I'd post a pic if I wasn't so cyberlogically inept.

$35?!? Touratech wants $110 now. Haven't checked BMW yet.
