Default Accessory Socket delay

I have just wired up an outlet to the "gps" accessory socket. It remains powered for about 60 seconds after the key is turned off. Why this specific length of time ? It is too short for a gas stop or a quick bathroom break, yet I am sure there is some logic behind having a delay of this length. Any ideas ?

Mine does it too. I don't worry about it anymore as there is no way to change it.

The owners manual for my '05 states "up to 15 minutes". Sometimes the delay is on the long end, but most of the time it is on the order of 1 minute. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. I suspect it has something to do with current draw and the current state of the battery.

There is no known way to know how long it will be, much less change it.

Thanks, sounds like it cannot be changed, but still curious about the duration. BMW usually has some rationale for what they do even if it makes little sense to their customers sometimes

I think it works like this: If there is a current draw detected, it remains on for the 15 minutes (in the case of the earlier 1200's) If there is no current draw detected, it switches off after 60 seconds.
