I have a 2012 GSA and I have the BMW aluminum cases and the locks are keyed to my ignition Key by the dealer. The latch latches but the key will not turn fully to the locked position and therefore unable to remove key. One actually works properly and one works half way. If I force it, it will break the key. I will take these in to the deal of course but has anyone heard of this before?

I had the same problem with mine. I used a little bit of graphite and a dental pick. Just squirt a little graphite into the lock and manipulate the pins with the dental pick (carefully!). It worked like a charm and only took a couple of minutes.

I think this is the nature of the beast. One of my locks was so tight that I thought it hadn't been keyed correctly. They were all stiff.
I used TriFlow. A drop or two on the key and then a bit of in-and-out (know what I mean, nudge nudge). Problem solved.

I don't mean to hijack the thread so please excuse me. I have Jesse panniers on my '09 GSA and noticed I couldn't unlock my top case and one pannier. Naturally, I was in a motel parking lot trying to repack the bike. Well, a fellow approached and wanted to talk about motorcycling as I was struggling with the locks. As it turned out, he was a BMW rider, noticed my plight and said, "Hit those locks with a bit of WD and you'll be good." He was right.
I called Al Jesse himself later and told him about the problem. He, too, said to use WD-40 to "flush out the road debris." I inquired about using graphite and he said, "No. You need to flush the dirt out and graphite won't do that. It just make the dirt a little slicker." 2¢ Mike Last edited by mikec; 18-Jan-2012 at 03:16 AM (386). |
