Default Duffel Bags

I've decided to shop for a duffel bag solution like I've seen used in a number of pics. I need more capacity than any top case I've seen. I do have the vario cases, so this would lay across the top of them. I'd be very interested in brands, sources, and thoughts from owners here. TIA

Thumbs up

I'll second Helen 2 Wheels. Although I've heard some complain, I've used her products for over 10 years now and whole heartedly recomend them. She's a rider, is always at major rallys demonstrating her product and gives great customer service.

Ortlieb brand dry duffels are the way to go. Waterproof, top loading and fit great on the back of the bike. I've used them for the last 6 riding seasons and can't say enough about them. Available from Aerostich.

+1 for Helen2wheels
Took a 3 month trip and was surprised how durable and waterproof these things are. Highly recommended.

Go pass by Wal Mart and look in the camping section.

Ozark Trail makes a duffle style dry bag (that opens at the top) for 20 bucks.
That way you won't be several hundred dollars into a bag that you really might not like.

I've had a set going on 6 months now and love them. When I went on my big trip I bought an Ortelib bag (like 30" in length).

Wit, just remember that old saying, you get what you pay for. A lot depends on what type of riding you do. Long distance camping trips are different from just local trips. If you're camping with your kids in the back yard a $40 Walmart tent is just fine. If it rains, go in the house to a warm dry bed. Same thing applys with the duffle. At the end of a long day of riding in the rain, miles from the nearest motel, if your clothes and sleeping bag are soaking wet you'd gladly pay an extra $50 for a good waterproof duffle. Just saying...

Which duffel depends upon which bike. If I'm on the old bike I've an Hellen2Wheels clothes sack that holds lots of stuff and is great strapped across my old bike. On the GS with the Zega cases I don't need that much room, so use a Sea to Summit compression dry sack to hold my sleeping bag -- the H2W roll top bag is too big for that use.

I have no idea what the price was of my H2W bag (it was a door-prize), but I know they ain't cheep. It has served for four years and as yet shows no sign of giving up. It still keeps the water out (hard rain being a factor in at least half the trips it has made), and still looks good too.
