Question of Vario Top Cases

I am thinking of getting a Vario top case and was wondering if they expand like the side cases.

They do. I am able to fit my Arai Quantum (size: M) in the case when fully expanded. A friend wears a Shoei (size: 2XL) and cannot close the case completely - for what it's worth.

Yes they expand and my wife's helmet JUST goes in but mine won't.

I changed my Vario panniers to Touratech Zegas as I was not happy with the Vario. I didn't change the topbox as I don't use it much but would not buy another one. Mine (as many others) had to be changed as it fell off the bike. I understand they have been modified to stop that but I am still not happy with it. Capacity is not that good, the Vario mechansim sticks and the plastic is easy to crack.

I just heard about this 'issue' of a top case falling off. I'm going to check with my dealer as to whether mine has been addressed or not. (I've only had my bike and top case for a month.) Do you know what the fix is? Different mount or hardware? I like to be an informed consumer before I set foot in a shop or store!

Brent, a quick look at the top case or mounting bracket on the rack will tell you if you have the new, improved top case and bracket. The new case has a locating pin in the bottom and the bracket on the rack has a corrisponding hole that this pin fits into. I've had the Vario bags for about 40,000 miles and am very well pleased with them. My original top case did crack and was replaced by BMW with the new case. I haven't heard of any problems with the new case.
