I remember when installing the mount a few months ago that I thought I couldn't move it forward on the bag any further because the release pin would be obstructed. But on closer inspection...I could probably move the mount forward 20mm or more (that will get you half of the space back from the barbacks you have on your GS). I hope the pictures attached show enough detail. The first is a reference with a metric tape measure. The second one I was trying to show the space available under and in front of the mount. And in the third one I am pulling the release pin to show its extension from the closed position (6mm). Even though the bag is rigid for form, it's also pliable so the mount could definitely be moved and the release pin mechanism will work fine.
This has turned out be a good exercise for me as well as I'm planning on installing my GPS on top of my bar clamps (visual line below gauges). In the event that the top of the bag is blocking my view of the bottom of the GPS, I now know that I can reposition the bag when previously I thought I was out of room. If anyone picks up one of these bags, post a follow-up. I'd like to how it works for everyone else. I'll plan on doing the same in a week once I use it for it's intended purpose. Brent

Will post when I get my bag, thanks again Brent.
What GPS are you installing?, I have a Zumo 550 and found it to be a lot more handy to install it in the left side of the handlebar. It is much easier to operate, especially when driving, as your hand just has to move a few inches from the grip. I have all the functions of my GPS working (XM Radio, Cell phone, weather, traffic and gps), so I frequently reach out to it. Also most common bottons are on the left side of the unit. Just my two cents. Regards, Fernando Last edited by fahz; 16-Mar-2008 at 06:59 PM (999). |

I bought a Zumo 550 (as well) and thanks for the positioning advice. A friend has one and the bike he bought came with the BMW bracket to put in the center. After sitting on his bike and thinking "I like where that's at" I bought the bracket. Who knows though, I might quickly realize that the left side would be better. Do you have any security concerns for the cradle using the RAM mount that comes with the 550?
What communication system do you use? (If it happens to be an Autocom, I will gladly accept any bits of wisdom about usage or install!) Thanks, Brent

I have no security concerns in terms of the Ram mount, I been using them for several years w/previous gps. They are adaptable, very sturdy. I take the zumo off road (gravel and dirt roads) where it takes a lot of vibrations and no problem. Security concerns in terms of being stolen, well I never leave it in the cradle when I park the bike. Let me know if you want to see a couple of pics.
I use an IMC MIT-100 comm system. It is pretty simple, but works very well overall. It is also very small, so I installed it under the seat. Only issue I have with the cell phone which connects via bluetooth to the zumo, is I get some static on my mic (people tell me they hear a lot of noice). Autocom's have great reputation, so you're probably pretty safe with that choice. Best,
