Default I didn't think I needed tires, but......

I am now wondering after reading numerous posts both here and on the ADV site. It seem that a lot of GSers are getting 6-8 thousand miles out of tires. I have a 2008 R1200GS with original Anakee's and 7,600 miles. I don't intentionally ride off road, although I have ended up on a few gravel roads. These tires have performed well, except for a lot of highway humming up to 60mph. I am anal about checking pressure and run 36/42. Visually, they look good to me; however, I am preparing for a 5,000 trip. I always try to err on the side of caution, so I have no problem getting tires if need be. Maybe I'll get them before the return trip. Just looking for your thoughts.

Tire wear is dependent upon many things. You mentioned pressure. Other items that effect wear are your right wrist and the makeup of the roads you ride. Some roads are smoother than others. And the makeup of the tire, of course.

I get anywhere from 6K to 11K per tire. Because of the wide range I ignore mileage and look at tread wear. The only gotcha when going on a long trip is that some tires wear faster as they get older. There's no rule that says you can't put a new tire on the bike mid trip. It might cost you a bit more than normal, though. BTDT.
