Interesting timing, a similar conversation is going on yesterday and today on the ldrider mailing list.
Besides putting about 50K miles a year between my two motorcycles, I ride in long distance motorcycle rallies and am considering trying one in preparation for the 2013 Iron Butt Rally. Would you mind giving me the specifics on what size rim you used (diameter and width), what size tire, and what adapter you needed to use? Were any other modifications needed (i.e. brakes). What kind of tire did you select and why (although I did find one page that gave some advice on tire selection)? I appreciate any info you would be willing to provide. Thanks! Eric |

Mark -- How's that handle in heavy rain? Seems like a contact patch that large under a relatively light load would make hydroplaning an issue.
I recently changed my sidecar pusher to a Vredestein Snow+ but haven't had a chance to check it out in a downpour. Before that I had a BFG Radial T/A on the tug and that was definitely prone to hydroplaning! Pete |

I just joined this forum, and this is the first thread I find.
It took me 3 pages of reading the posts to realize this was not a joke. I could have sworn it was. I had to check out the "darkside" website before I realized this was serious. I am all for trying new things, being innovative, and finding what works for you and your riding style, but I don't think testing the darkside against proven moto tires in the twisties is a good idea. How are you going to find out the point at which the tires fail to perform as well as the moto tires without getting hurt ? I think it is funny, and never would have believed that it would be even rideable like that, but if it is good for you, and you have proven it safe for your personal riding... why not ? -RallyeChadlye |

I'm still here and riding.
the darkside is for me.. I ride hard. i take the car tire as far as i took the bike tire. all i have is pros for switching to the darkside. I cant think of one con. I got a kick how many people got upset with the darkside here. When this tire wears out in 10k or more i would liek to try the verds +1 snow tire out.. looks good. i heard a lot of good reports about it. but they do wear much quicker if only used on asphalt. |

I just had to join in guys. Some of you are misinformed.
2007 R1200 GS. 60+ K miles. 2008 GL1800 Goldwing. Live in VA. I run a car tire on my Goldwing. 30K miles. I ride hard, I ride 2-up and I ride the twisties. Like he says. The tire is safer. Better traction. Better stopping. Better tire life. There is more tire/street contact in a sharp turn than a regular MC tire. The tire is legal. It passes VA state inspection and the insurance co will pay off in an accident. A side care rig has the same title as a MC title. It's economical. $120 for a tire that gets up to 20-30K miles. It just may be the next tire I put on my GS. |

Very interesting..........I don't think I will do it but motorcycle tire manufacturing companies should do something about long lasting tires................wouldn't it be nice to change tires every 50K or 60K miles?
