Default No longer in neutral when it starts in the morning?

This is a strange one. Every night I coast into the garage, toe the bike into neutral, kickstand down, key off. For the past few mornings when I get on the bike to fire it up the transmission is no longer in neutral and the gear diplay is indicating second. Then neutral. When I let the clutch out sure enough, it's in gear. Then I fiddle with the shifter and it finally gets into neutral. I let the clutch out and back out of the garage.

At no other times am I having even a hint of a problem. I find neutral easily at stop lights, no missed shifts, the indicator is fine.

I'd suspect my son was sitting on the bike and playing around but he's a bit short for it.

Anybody else seen anything like this?

Eric

Sick the cat after the mice playing in your garage.

Seriously, like you'd I'd suspect a third party. Is your son too small to play with the shift lever with his hands? I know it's something that would attract my 4 1/2 year old grandson.

Default Neutral Problems

I have a 2004 model which has had similar problems. The mechanic put the test box on it (as it had other electric porblems also - see below) and found the gearbox potentiometer was nackered. This thing sends signals to the dashboard and the computer telling the system what gear you are in. In Australia the replacement cost is $300 plus labor. The other electrical problems were the side stand cut-off switch, the safety switch on the clutch lever - this is an Australian Design Rule requirement, and lastly a non BMW battery which, although it was the right physical size and voltage didn't have enough grunt (amps I guess) to sustain the requirements of the electrical system and computer. Hence lots of low voltage faults coming up on the test kit. Mechanic has now fitted a Deka baterry - apparently they are made in the USA ane he says they are the ducks guts and better than the more expensive genuine BMW battery.
Ciao Pedro

My gear selection indicator has been all wonkers for awhile. Once I run it through the gears it's fine it mainly happens on start up.

I have also had a couple wierd faults but I'm not sure how much of it is due to regular riding (things resettling) or maybe the battery is going off. The bike got rode 1/2 a dozen times a year (touring) before I got it. I flog it every day.

So far I've had a stray lamp fault for the headlight, had to reset the front brake switch (rear lamp fault). I have also had the occasional ABS fault (wouldn't turn off after moving). Plus the afor mentioned wonky gear selector (getting worse). I did pull the plug clean it up and apply dielectric grease which sorted it out for about 3-4 months.

I am leaning to the battery as anytime I put it on the tender it takes 15-20 minutes to go from "charging" to "green".
