Default Drain Plugs Question

When changing oils in my 09 GS I found it interesting that neither the engine oil or transmission drain plugs had magnets on them. But the transmission fill plug does. The final drive drain does also. Why would the transmission *fill* plug have a magnet? Does anyone know a source for replacement magnetic drain plugs? Thanks.

Thanks Smartin. They aren't cheap, $30 each, but appear to be very good ones.

Funny, they (magneticdrainplug.com) do not tell on their website how the magnet is attached to the drain plug. hmmmmm.

I guess I should put a dab of epoxy where the magnet mates with the plug.

Default Drain Plugs Question

I put a dab of JB Weld on mine and have never had a problem with them. Ran them on Harleys for years and now on my BMWs.

Default Why do we want magnetic drain plugs?

Seriously, that may seem like a stupid question here, but is the point of the magnet to keep any metal fragments down in the sump so they won't be pumped around? It seems to me that it would all come out at each oil change right?

For me the point of a magnetic drain plug is a place to catch worn metal bits so I can see them when doing an oil change. If I see them and can feel them when rubbing them off of the end of the plug with my fingers then I know I have problems. If I can't feel anything then it is likely normal wear and tear.

Finding this

when I changed the oil on my R69S last April led to a complete tear down of the engine. Better to find such things in your garage. It's more painful when you are out in the road. Click on the image for a short video.
