Default Fuel pump control board fix?

I'm running a 2005 GS and plan on keeping it a long while. I'm also planning on using the bike for commuting a lot more this year because of fuel costs. That's going to mean a lot more riding in the rain - which I used to tend to avoid. With all the talk about the fuel pump control board sitting in a puddle I'm guessing that there's going to be a failure soon.

Is there a retrofit to protect the board?

If not, I'm thinking of taking it off and slathering it in polyurethane sealant (except for any heat sinks and the connectors. The latter gets silicone grease.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Eric

Eric, I too have an '05 with about 45,000 miles on it. I had to replace the fuel pump module very early on at approx 5,000 miles. If memory serves correctly the problem was with the o-ring seal on the module (either defective or installed incorrectly) allowing water in. If you're the original owner and the module wasn't replaced under warranty I'd probably either replace it or just buy a replacement and keep it on the bike for insurance. Again, if I remember correctly it was around $80and a very easy 20 minute roadside fix if you have the module.

Since replacing the module I've ridden through day long monsoon type rains that soaked me to the bone but not a hiccup from the bike. While I suspect most of the bad ones have been replaced I really wouldn't worry about it at this point but...if it worries you, a $80 part in the tool kit (it's really quite small) might be worth it I think I'd pass on the polyurethane sealant but that's just me.

Jim

PS There was a recall on these modules back in '06 so I suspect your's has been replaced.

Leave well enough alone? Well, you asked!

There were two different issue. One was a bad O-ring letting moisture in where it didn't belong. If your's hasn't failed yet why disturb it?

The second issue had something to do with heat and the heat sink. That issue didn't happen to the early bikes (like the EWS problem didn't happen to the early bikes) suggesting that a bad part substitution happened, causing the issue.

My '05 gets ridden in the rain, plenty. No issues in 60K. If I were the worrying kind of guy I'd have a spare controller and O-ring on the shelf just in case. I don't. instead I know how to bypass the controller should it fail on the road. If that is a bit more than you want to do (some folks are uncomfortable playing with electrical stuff on the side of the road) buy one of the bypass cables to keep on the bike.

Default got a schematic?

I'm not fazed by wiring or the BMW claims that the CAN bus will blow up. I can jumper the thing. But you're right, if it's not broke I'm not going to fix it.
