So, today I walked into the BMW dealer and ordered a yellow 1200 GS Adventure. Not too strange an event, it happens every day. The funny thing is, I've never owned a bike in my life. Over the years I might have driven 3 bikes for a total of 300 kms.

So what the heck did I get myself into, I wonder now. I will have to go get my motorcycle drivers license (which will take a week) just to drive the 15 km tar roads out to the desert, where I will be driving mostly.

The question I want to ask though, is about tires. What would be the best compromise for on/off road tires? I wont be doing any serious driving either on or off road. The whole aim of the bike is to get me to photographic spots easier than with my 4x4.

Take a class and then practice, practice, and practice some more. Also practice how to pick up your bike. You will drop it.

A popular tire for on/off road is the TKC-80. Downside is that the rear tire doesn't last all that long.
