Default Auxillary Outlets...

Hi all,
I was looking through my manual for my 2005 GS and noticed it mentioned having 2 auxillary outlets for accessories. I have found the one under the seat on the left side of the bike but cannot locate the one listed being in the cockpit for gps hookups etc. It looks like it should be on the left hand side of the bike under the handlebar or just in front of it but can't seem to find it. Is that something that was added later to the bike during production and my bike may have missed out on that feature?

Todd

It's an optional extra that you can install yourself or have your dealer do. Installation involves drilling a hole in the plastic for the outlet and adding an extension cord that ties into the feed for the rear socket.

Where do they tie into the rear socket power??? Any special method of drilling a hole in the plastic, or just use the a normal hole drilling procedure?
Thanks!

The "gps" outlet is located in front of the fuel tank and is secured to the left side of front tree with tape or zip tie. It is a special female connector that requires a plug that you can wire to your gps hard wire.

The BMW cable has both a male and a female connectors on one end. You unplug the cable that goes to the aux socket and plug it into the appropriate connector on the cable. Then plug the remaining connector into the socket. I didn't drill any holes as I didn't use it for a generic plug. I've read that a step drill works well.

As papachiax6 noted there is also a "GPS" socket already near the front of your bike. You'd have to buy the appropriate connector and make a cable to connect the "GPS" socket to a powerlet style socket.

I would use the gps socket already installed on your bike when new. It is a switched socket so you won't run your battery down if you leave your gps on. I bought the male side from my dealer and wired to my gps hard wire kit as mentioned. You should be able to buy a hard wire kit that includes a fused link to protect your GPS. After all it's only money right. I bought my hard wire stuff from Tourtech for the garmin 500. If you need a pic let me know.

The GPS socket and the accessory socket are, for all practical purposes, in parallel. Both energize with the ignition and both de-energize some number of minutes (typically one, but up to 15 according to the manual) after key off. The only difference between the two is wiring. The GPS socket is closer to the front of the bike.

If you are installing a generic accessory socket of the BMW/Powerlet type at the front of your bike you will have to custom make a cable to use use the GPS socket. BMW will sell you a pre made cable if you connect to the main accessory socket.

In short: If connecting a GPS or some other specific accessory where you have to do some wiring anyway I'd use the GPS socket. If adding a secondary accessory socket I'd tie into the main accessory socket even though that mean removing the tank for best wire routing.

Smile Touratech power panel.

I have a 2005 model, with just the one outlet under the seat, so i instaled a Touratech extension panel.
About an hour to fit. It has one powerlet socket, and one hella type socket.
The power remains ON, unless you install an inline on-off switch.
Simple solution.
