Default Howdy & Welcome

I have had a R1200gs for 4 years now and have not heard of a after market key channel. From my experience with BMW they guard their Keys.

The only way I know of getting a key is contacting a BMW dealer. I had to show my ID and registration and once they found me on the BMW database they ordered a spare key for me.

Maybe one of the elder statesmsn will reply with different knowledge. This forum is a great forum specific to the R1200gs model but responses are a bit slower than others. But you will get an answer

Here is a great search string to use on this forum and others. Just replace "key" with any search word or phrase

site:www.advrider.com key
site:www.r1200gs.info/forum/ key

Default lost spare key

JoeF is correct. I ordered a spare from my dealer about 3 months after I purchased the GSA. I watched as they ordered it and they had to jump through security hoops to order it. It wasn't a big deal but is wasn't like ordering a crush washer. Oh, they're kinda pricy, too, but that should be no surprise.

Joe, I am pretty sure you are right that you have to get a new key from a BMW dealer.

The links you posted now give me more places to surf to, looks like a lot of good reading. Thanks

I purchased a spare key from BMW last year. It cost me $50 for the key and another $15 shipping from the dealer to me (106 miles away). I offered to supply a stamped envelope and they refused saying that BMW insisted on UPS insured delivery. I asked then for BMW to ship directly to me and they said not allowed.

Just curious. Is the spare key able to start the engine?
I thought any new key must be introduced to the bike's immobilizer system using GT1 at BMW dealer.

Coolrider, I guess you talking about the black plastic key. Yes, it will start the engine. Many riders, me included, order a spare metal key to keep in a secure spot, just in case. I keep the black plastic key in the same ziplock bag as the spare immobilizer ring . . . just in case.

Mike, I'm talking about any ignition key bought from BMW dealer without taking the bike to the dealer like huntly2 did.
Wondering if the key can start the engine without introducing it to the bike with GT1.

The GT1 is not needed for a new key. BMW will provide a working key once you give them the bike VIN, proof that you own the bike, and some money. At this point ONLY BMW can provide a working key.

Apparently the GT1 can tell the bike that an old key is no longer valid, useful if a key has been lost.
