Hi,
bought my GS almost a year ago and the warranty is about to expire. The renewal is £310 for basic cover. Its a 2006 with 12,000 on the clock. I'd appreciate any advice on what sort of things can go wrong and whether you think its worth paying for at this stage, i.e. are there any know problems that are highly likely to occur at some stage. Of course if money were no object - absolutely, but that's the problem! Cheers in advance, and a cool, calm and collected Christmas to you. |

I've found that around 12k (on previous bikes), is when a lot of things need to be replaced or maintained. Personally, I would consider how much wear and tear the bike has had (eg. short, daily drive commutes) and what's up next on the maintenance schedule; and add the caveat that dealers charge $100/hour.
It's a tough question, but DIY maintenance on a regular basis may help you decide. Sorry if this sounds like a Dr. Phil response

Some GS's of your bike's vintage suffered from key sensor antenna failure.
There is a ring antenna around the key that communicates to read the transponder in the key. No read transponder, no start bike. Check what the cost of a replacement ring antenna is and whether it is covered by the warranty. That single item may justify the continued warranty cost. Ditto with the fuel pump controller. Some had a tendency to get wet and fry. This disables the fuel pump. It can be bridged out in an emergency so that the fuel pump runs all the time, but that is most undesireable under normal working conditions as you have to switch the power to the fuel pump separately from the key operation.

Thanks all very much for your input.
I called my local dealer today to get some costs and although the labour for the parts mentioned alone is £400 UK pounds, I'm not going for the warranty this time, I may regret it, but can't afford it just now. They did have a recall on the Key Antenna, but it didn't effect my model luckily, so I'd have to be very unlucky for that to go. Thanks again and hope you all have a good 2012 |

thanks for that, really interesting to hear. It's hard to counter the scare stories sometimes, but your info helps put things into perspective.
Thanks again and a Happy, trouble free riding 2012 to you Carl |
