Default So what happens...

when you forget to do the throttle valve procedure when reinstalling the battery? The other question is, do you crank the throttle immediately when you turn the key on or wait till it runs through it's precheck?

I don't know about the throttle procedure, but I let the the prechecks run through before I start the bike.

Don't worry about it...makes no difference.

The R1200 RepROM has the same procedure.
  • Connect the lead to battery negative terminal (3) and install screw (1) with washer (2). Make sure that the connecting cable is routed correctly.
  • Switch on the ignition.
  • Without starting the engine, fully open the throttle once or twice, so that the control unit of the BMW engine management system can register the throttle-valve positions.
  • Switch off the ignition.

OMalley44... no harm. Just do it before the next time you start the bike. It lets the engine management know what the throttle limits are.

What would be the repercussions of installing the battery and never setting the throttle limits to the EEPROM?

The engine management learns over time. The startup procedure just minimizes the time. Eventually, while riding the bike you'll crack the throttle wide open and the engine management will notice the new upper limit.

As to what it does with that information... don't know for sure. Probably uses a percentage of throttle opening to help compute appropriate air/fuel ratios. If it thinks that maximum is less than actual any calculations made using that datum will not be as accurate as they could be. I haven't a clue if you'd notice the difference. Perhaps someone who plays with stuff like the power commander will have a better answer.
