Being the proud owner of one of the first R1200GS released in 2004 in New Zealand and have clocked up 140,000K's of trouble free motorcycling I have nothing but praise for the bike.
Recently though I have a small issue with the rear brake light sticking on intermittently and as the bike has the powered servo brakes the pump also stays on with the light. I have checked the obvious such as the hand guard fouling the brake lever, plus unplugged the micro-switch and spayed copious amounts of WD40 around the switch and the master cylinder on the handlebars. To date nothing has fixed the problem so I was wondering if anyone else had brake light issues such as this?? I would be interested in anyone's ideas if you are able to shed some light on the subject. (no pun intended) Peter. |

Peter,
Did you also check the switch on the rear brake foot pedal? With a multimeter you should be able to check to see if the switches are opening and closing as expected. I wish I could be of more help, but I'm new to BMW. If the switches check out OK, it could be a spot where the insulation has worn off a wire, making it seem like the switch is closed. The wiring diagrams are here, if they would do you any good: http://www.r1200gs.info/R1200GS-WD2.pdf John |

I just had same problem with my other beemer. It is was the front brake lever switch that was sticking. I fixed it with heat from a blow drier, wd40, and then contact cleaner. Mine is working fine now but I am watching it.

Strange I should read this as mine takes a spell and does it. I lately after trying spray lubes to no avail, tried putting the bike on the side stand and putting a few drops of pure silicon liquid lube on it. It runs down to the switch over night and this solves the problem so far. The lube I use comes with the Aria helmet for the visor mech. Just a thought as it has worked for me. Alan
