Default Rides

After 50+ years of riding I can't remember all the bikes I have had. I know my first was an I ordered from Sears & Robuck, it came on a box and put the few pieces together so I could ride.

I traded a Kawaski 1800 Vulcan in on my GSA 2012, and sold my F650 BMW as the dealer didn't offer me what I thought it was worth.

I still have an old Greeves 1964, it has been sitting but this year I am hoping to have it running again. Been working on it when I can and have found the few parts I need to get it back to running I hope.

The rest don't matter. They were just a stopping point on the way up. Only the KZ440LTD remains important since it was my first.

I rode an '87 Kawasaki Concours. Pretty much wore it out. I expect to get at least 20 years out of my '11 GS Adventure.

Hi All,
I jumped off a Suzuki BKing...!
With 180hp, it was a real weapon.

Love my GS though.

I missed the second part of the question:

I loved my Concours dearly. One year I put 24,000 miles on it. That was on sandy ice in VT, then a 'long way' circle to Alaska, via MD, TN, AZ, WA, up to Alaska, and back through Canada to Vermont. It was actually a figure 8, because I rode the ferry from Alaska back to Bellingham, WA. That was really fun, because they loaded the ferry with the motorcycles last. That meant every time the boat stopped, The motorcyclists would be called down to move their bikes so they could unload the larger vehicles. The crew would say "Go ride around. Be back in two hours." I saw a lot of Alaska that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

I liked the fairing as it kept me dry (until I slowed down), but it was hot during the summer. Removing the plastic bodywork and/or gas tank for routine maintenance kind of a hassle, even though I modified it as best I could.

I like my GS for the convenience of maintenance, although my next modification is to cut a hole in the bash plate so I can remove/install an oil filter without removing it. I took the whole lower cowl off my Concours.

I'm glad to not have a radiator and all of it's associated issues. I'm also glad that I don't have to buy a new mirror ($100) every time my bike falls off it's wheels...

J

I forget the particular route of those trips, because I rode from VT to WA a second time, following roads I hadn't ridden the first time.
