This thread mentions the Zumo, but I've got an older Quest which I assumed that I could connect to the switched plug mentioned. I purchased the harness plug from the dealer, hooked it up and got 12 volts, so good so far...then, I connected the GPS wiring and the voltage dropped and wouldn't even turn the GPS on. What am I missing here or did I do something wrong? The GPS doesn't pull much juice and it is 12 volt in, the conversion is in the mount.

Was the ignition on? Power is supplied when the ignition is on. It goes off from 1-15 minutes after the ignition is turned off. It will also go off if the ZFE detects excess current draw.
If the socket starts hot when the ignition is switched on but then immediately goes off you likely have a wiring issue. |

I fixed it. The problem was in the 3 wires, of which two are hot with the other being ground. I chose one that showed 12 volts, but it was not the correct one. It dropped down to less than 2 volts under a load. I checked the other wire which also had 12 volts, but did not drop under load. Grassroots BMW in Cape helped with that one...thanks Dave.

Hopefully this post will help others. I spent a good part of yesterday wiring my Zumo 665. Going into this I thought, finally BMW did something that made great sense. They put a can bus plug at the front of the bike for making gps wiring a snap. I bought the adapter plug from Touratech and was ready to get into it. I had asked beforehand if this plug was hot (always on, even with the bike turned off) or switched. I was told it was switched. Perfect. When it was finally done, all wires neatly tucked and zip tied, I come to find out it is always hot. After turning the bike off.....gps is still on. WTF !!! If I had known this I would have never wired it that way. All it takes is one time (and I have done this), of getting off the bike and forgetting to turn the gps off only to return later on to a dead battery. So....back to the drawing board. Cut and remove all zip ties, remove a couple pannels on the right side of the bike and route the wires toward the battery. This time around I tapped into a wire that someone had mentioned on another thread somewhere that was a switched wire. Under the seat there is a black capped plug with a bunch of wires leading to it. Find the green wire with the blue stripe and tap into it for your positive. Gps black ground wire can ground anywhere but I went ahead and put it on the negative terminal of the battery since it is close in proximity. Fired up the bike....GPS ON. Turned off the bike, GPS shuts down. Success ! Can bus adapter....right into the trash.

It is not ALWAYS hot. It is hot for UP TO 15 minutes after turning off the ignition.
Oh, and the accessory socket (that's what it is) has zero to do with the CAN bus. It's directly connected to the ZFE. Last edited by marc; 28-Apr-2013 at 12:11 PM (716). |

I've always wondered why BMW had the GPS wire stay hot for some minutes after the bike was switched off. Probably a courtesy thing so you could do some GPS maintenance without having it just go blank when you stopped riding. Makes sense. Our GPSes were wired that way for a while and they reliably switched off after a time.
