I just got my 05 GS out of the shop where it underwent the 24K service which was as you can see from the photos was extensive. The main problem and cause of concern was on oil leak.

I first noticed this leak when I took the bike in for the 12,000 mile service and pointed it out to the technicians. They said they would keep an eye on it. After hearing of problems other GS owners had requiring the engine/transmission assembly to be split, I persisted on the 24K check and asked them to investigate further which they did. This was the result:

The problem, from my understanding of it, is that a seal had failed in the transmission on the input shaft side allowing gear oil to leech into the dry space between the engine and the transmission where the clutch is. As you can see, in order to repair this, they had to split the bike.

Note the oil trail around the outside rim of the transmission unit that alerted me to the problem. The red arrow indicated the suspected problem area.

Once I convinced the dealer that we had something more than a little spilled oil, they repaired everything under warranty replacing all transmission seals, clutch plate, etc. etc. cheerfully.
