Post Added a second radiator fan to my 2017 GSA

My 2017 GSA is set up primarily for off pavement. In July and August while traversing some "rancher" roads at mostly slow speeds in high heat. Cant help but notice the one cooling fan stays on sorta a bit longer than I like at times. 211 its on and off at 205-206. Hmmmm?

So fast forward to now and Im getting it ready for cooler weather by adding two power ports for my heated gear. https://www.r1200gs.info/forum/attac...chmentid=24317 Decided to go with the Rowe electronics Amplink for power and have extra lines in case I decided to add more electronics. Mounted it outside on the right side.https://www.r1200gs.info/forum/attac...chmentid=24319 It will fit under the seat but sitting on the seat it gets pushed up against the computer. Didn't think it was a good idea.

Before I added the power ports I could see that BMW graciously added a 2nd radiator fan bracket and there is an electrical plug right above it. Perfect! Lets get er done! Well not so fast..ha! First problem. BMW parts has no listing for a left fan. So no used factory ones out there. Second problem. The plug above the left bracket has three wires and is auxiliary. Maybe the alarm system?

After verifying that both radiator mounts are identical I picked up a used fan. I did have to remove one little tab (there are 4) on the fan itself so I could pop the fan over the lower hose. A nut and bolt through the lower part of the bracket holds it secure. I did have to make a cut out on the factory panel for my wiring. https://www.r1200gs.info/forum/attac...entid=24321But it was not needed if I had NOT secured the wiring BEFORE test fitting the panel. The two crimps are under no tension what so ever.

So using one trigger wire to the factory fan power will flow to the second fan. And the beauty of the Amplink is its possible to delay power on or off for up to three components. I have the left fan power up one second after the factory fan and stay on 12 seconds after it shuts off. The temperature falls to as low as 199-200 that way. As I get out there more in the heat and watch it, I may increase the second fan delay for a few more lowered degrees.

Oh and another thing with the Amplink its possible to deactivate any circuit at any time...So during the winter months when I dont need extra cooling. Its off.
And the opposite of course with the heated gear power plugs.

I did use the 7.5 amp circuit under the seat to power the Amplink. https://www.r1200gs.info/forum/attac...tid=24323Thats the white wire in photo. Seems to shut off after 45-50 seconds in my guestimation.

Nice project...:grin2

I don't own a water cooled GS yet, but don't they come with two radiators and two fans from the factory?

My 2017 GSA has 2 radiators and one fan on the right side. I think he meant added a 2nd fan.

OK cool!! Wonder why BMW would use only one fan though.

Because one fan does the job quite well.

If you look at the side with the fan all the air is defected through the fan. The cowling and fan is restricting the air at higher speeds but at low speeds the fan keeps the bike cool. The side without a fan lets the bike cool at higher speeds. If all your riding is at low speeds and the weather is always hot a second fan would work well.

So far Im pleased the temp falls to 199-200 with the 2nd fan poking along on level ground. looking forward to its performance when climbing a steep grade at low speeds. And $100 for fan and shipping, its a bargain.

I wont argue that. But BMW put that second bracket there for a reason.
Maybe perhaps contemplating larger cooling systems a few years on? I think with ever increasing emissions
standards its inevitable.

I think eventually there will be a 2nd factory fan.
