Strange R1250GS engine noise.

I have noticed that my new R1250GS has a strange and unexpected engine noise.

It occurs when the engine is under load at all speeds and all gears. A typical circumstance - 50 mph in top gear when slightly opening the throttle there is a strange rattle/slight knock/grumble. It's always difficult to describe a mechanical sound but it's obviously fairly loud if I can hear it at 50 with a full face helmet and silicone ear plugs.

My dealer said 'it's still a new'.

My previous two water cooled 1200s never had this issue.

Any ideas?

Could it be coming from the ShiftCam?

No, unless it is malfunctioning.

I tend to agree. Although the Shift Cam appears to make a quite a clunk when changing from one camshaft to the other (see/hear enzo5000's video) to make the noise I am hearing it would have to be shifting cams several thousand times a minute!

Bit of a mystery.

My thought, exactly. Even mildly twisting the throttle in 6th at 50 MPH is a recipe for lugging the engine. I'd expect to hear nasty rattling. Downshift first. I'm more likely to be in 4th gear at 50 MPH than 6th.

It makes the same noise when accelerating from 50mph in 4th, 5th or 6th!!!

Been doing some more research. Read a road test report where the author referred to a 'whirring mechanical sound'. This might be what I'm hearing. Could be a characteristic of the 1250 engine.

Matter of interest - does anyone on this Forum have a R1250GS? Perhaps there's a clue in the name, BMW R1200GS Forum?

By the number of 1250 owner posts I'd say the answer is yes. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them

At 50mph in 6th gear my R1250GS is revving at 2800rpm. Looking at various performance graphs at those revs it produces about 42 bhp and an astonishing 84 ft/lbs of torque.

With all that grunt I think 'lugging the engine' is never going to be an issue.

If only my 250 had as much power and grunt at maximum revs.

Couldn't be further from the truth. The 1250 has a bunch of torque and running in 6th at 50mph is perfectly normal and the bike accelerates quite well from there without any rattling. The shift indicator comes on well below 50 for the move from 5th to 6th.
