Find one with service records

Given that 2005 was the first year of the oilhead R1200GS, you want to find a bike that has service records. There were a number of warranty fixes that should have been done, including some complete transmissions that were replaced by BMW. Mine also has the complex linked power brakes with the ABS, so you want to be sure that is working correctly. I think you are in the price ballpark. I found a 2005 out here in the Pacific Northwest with 53K miles and service records. Price was $5K, but then I did a complete big service: tune up, tires, battery, alternator belt, et cetera, and so I have about $7K in it. I love it, and am looking forward to putting another 50K miles on it.

EXACTLY what I was thinking!!! I will do a complete service on the bike when I purchase it, ie; brakes, ABS bleed, oil change, valve adjustment, etc........I have a lift and capable of doing most myself. Clymers is your friend!!!
I like this site already, great advice, Thanks to all!!!
Looking forward to meeting at the 2020 Rally!!!
