I don't think I've ever popped open a tent anywhere because it was a cheaper place to sleep. As long as the temperatures aren't too oppressively hot, I almost always sleep better in camp than a hotel bed. However, I've been camping for several years off the bike and have my camping kit pretty well sorted for every contingency.

That said, camping in mid-summer in the part of the country you're going to be riding - no thanks. I agree with Doc on that feeling. I might still bring my camping stuff just in case I found a higher altitude bucolic spot to spend a night but I wouldn't have much expectation that I'd use it. I often bring it on my longer trips because I can get my entire camp packed into about 30 liters of space on the bike with my table and chair strapped to the top of the panniers.

After reading all of this. I figure I'll spend more on the camping gear than I will on motel rooms. If you are trying to make some miles, decent food, and rest, and showers and recreational beverages will make the journey more enjoyable and safer. I consider "roughing it" having to stay at a La Quinta because the Marriott is full...

I think everybody who rides motorcycles should do some motorcycle tent camping! It is a great adventure and you need to get that "stuff" outta your system! My problem was always water, water and water to drink, cook, clean and bathe in..State and Fed campgrounds have it but charge $25-35 per night and if you travel with a buddy you can share a cheap hotel room for about $50 each with running water, a fridge, shower, bed and AC! If you bought a BMW you are NOT on a tight budget...When I was younger I could take the heat, bugs and thin air mattress a lot better than I can now...Plus a lighter bike is more fun on a twisty road! I will standby for all the rocks that are going to be thrown my way for being an old pu&&y!
