Excellent report: great photos. Am sure BMW would love those for PR.

I spent a weekend in Ladakh after Thanksgiving about 7 years ago. The town Leh was mostly shuttered at the time, no hot water, but still it was one of the best weekends ever with Buddhist temple visits and rides up to the mountain lakes that are pictured in VirkDoc's report. Tea with Indian army who invited us into their tent at the highest outlook point in the region. Everyone so friendly.

One question: Do you find major roads leading up to the region as dangerous say the roads from Delhi to Agra? I thought of driving my GS inside India but the driving is insane.

Yes by november the road to Leh is shut, you must have flown into Leh then and most of the hotels close, home stays do stay open.
The lake is Tso Pangong......More than half is in Chinese control and the rest with India. The colors are stunning as the sun changes position.
There is not much traffic going up besides an occasional military convoy.
Delhi Agra is INSANE....actually most of India is like that.....like a video game
Will add more pics of the two major lakes Tso Pangong and Tso Moriri

Not possible to rent beemers but people rent Royal enfields 500 or the Royal Enfield himalayans

Can you shed any light on which brand seemed to last longer [ mileage ], have more overall performance on various surfaces?

The karoo 3 on the africa twin were shot badly 75% gone, the shinkos rear had 50% left.......
On the roads the Shinkos were better....on the rough the Karoos

See your GSA registered in Chandigarh. GS/ GSAs will face this problem of fixed points for forward plates which Triumph overcame with extensions

My hayabusa had the same issue, just carried the front HSRP in the toolbox, and have the number written on the front windshield

My wife and I just returned from this heavenly place. Rode for two weeks on Royal Enfield Himalayans and although they may not be a BMW, they are an amazing workhorse and are so at home in this environment.
The Nubra Valley, Sarchu and Pangong Lake are without doubt some of the most spectacular locations on earth. Add motorcycles into the mix and you can easily start to believe you found nirvana.

Not for the faint of heart though. This can quickly change from a peaceful ride to one that can hurt or even kill you.
Ride to the conditions, your skill level and be mindful of those around you.
