If you want hard cases, then I would jump on the used Jesse system.
The Varios are heavy, but built of plastic, the telescoping feature eats up huge volume, and in the end, the Varios have less volume than the Jesse's (10") yet stick out farther. The point of this comment is that the Jesse's are <39" wide (handle bar width) so if your bars fit, then your bags will fit too; anything narrower really doesn't matter, so since the Jesse's are less than 39", you get maximum capacity along with the right clearance, whereas the Varios will be wider than the bars at max capacity, which is less than the Jesse max capacity. Plus, the Jesse's are equal width, so your bike remains symmetrical from side to side, which is good for balance and looks.
....Then there's the durability issue.... Crash those fully extended Varios, and they are probably toast, whereas the Jesse's are about the toughest hard cases you can buy. I know this because I crashed a set of Jesse's at 60mph and while the smashed case is trashed (ground off hinge and bent out of square), it could be bent back into shape for the remainder of an extended trip.
