Called a PLB, it's a small handheld device that communicates through a satellite link. You register it's serial number through the service provider. When you punch the yuppie 911 button the box has your latitude and longitude from an on-board GPS, it radios this to the service provider through a satellite link and they set up a search to find you.
It's something you can easily stash in your saddlebag, works globally.
See an example here:
I have one. Never needed it because I have it.

SOS is part of BMW's ConnectedDrive system which is available in Australia on BMW automobiles so the infrastructure is in place for the simple SOS feature on the GS.
For this reason I would be extremely surprised if the SOS feature didn't find its way down under.
Often times dealers give out incorrect information for various reasons but in this case I would suspect that the dealer is trying to get you to pull the trigger now by having you believe that an option that you want is not going to become available.

2018 R1200GS - No SOS in Australia?
I was speaking to my dealer today about the new 2018 models, and I mentioned that I was waiting for new features such as the TFT, and the emergency SOS system.
He said that it may not be coming to Australia - has anyone else got info regarding this? It's a feature that I would never want to use, but would really like to have just in case...
