Here is a rundown of my issue. If anyone has any ideas, that would be great. I have gotten some very helpful info from another forum site, but I am seeing if anything can be done before I need to trailer it 3 hours away to the nearest dealer.

2015 BMW R1200GS

10/27/19 Took off road riding course. Warning light and engine icon came on early in the day and stayed on the entire time.

10/28/19 Trailered bike home

10/29/19 Rode bike approx 4 miles to storage unit. Followed directions in owners manual concerning this situation and did not push the bike, rode conservatively.

11/04/19 Attached GS 911 scanner to bike according to directions. Ran Auto scan. Filed results. Cleared fault codes and reset service reminder. Bike does not start. Battery charge is full. Lights come on. Depress starter; clicking sound near the starter-will not turn over. With power on, there is an erratic clicking from the instrument cluster.

NEXT DAY

Put charger on battery in case it is weak. Apparently it is just showing a floating charge of about 12 volts, but had no power for cranking. Got the bike started, but the general warning symbol came on along with the engine icon. Engine runs a little rough.

Could be a defective coil pack; albeit, no code so indicating. Coils can go intermittently bad. This would trigger the engine light. On other BMW models with four and six cylinders, this is a common problem. I haven’t heard much about failed coils on the boxer engine.

I am going to order the battery today. Thanks all. It needs a new one anyway. Any thoughts on keeping a batt tender on it? I have heard good and bad.

I ride most all months of the year here in TX. I don't use a battery tender. I have put a trickle charger on to top off the battery when I have not been riding in a several weeks. I don't use a trickle charger otherwise in between rides.

I’m a big believer in Battery Tender. I have one one every bike, utv, lawn tractor, utility tractor, and etc. I believe they do extend battery life. On the John Deeres, I Think they at least double the life.

One note; I don’t use them as chargers. Start with a fully charged battery.

Do you happen to know the error/fault code for defective coil pack? We have an issue we imagine is the coil but hope to confirm via code, I just can't find any info on BMW error codes to cross reference.

I keep my R1200GS on a battery tender because I found there was a slight bit of parasitic loss on the new battery over last winter. After all, these bikes are now computers that happen to have wheels. That has kept the battery strong and the computer displays happy. No, I don't know if the tiny drain is OEM or from some aftermarket wiring the PO did, but a battery tender was a simple solution.

Regarding battery tender, I put one on if one of my bikes sits more than 3 weeks. Splitting one tender across two bikes encourages you to take them for a spin in winter.
