Hi all, I have a 2018 R1200gs TE 22000 miles with a tft screen, 7 months ago I had to stop riding due to poor health…… 7 months later and obviously the battery is flat it’s the original, so I bought a replacement and charged it and fitted it. Now the tft has no red light flashing, the bikes steering won’t unlock and ignition won’t turn on, the battery is reading 12.8 v and I have power either side of the 10amp fuse and the 50bpm is ok, also power at starter relay, I’ve replaced battery in fob and tried the plastic key under the wheel arch any ideas??

My bike is a 2008, and I have never used the steering lock, but I would guess that the state of the steering lock mechanism is stored in volatile memory. In other words, if its locked while the battery dies, the bike doesnt know its locked and wont unlock. I had a similar issue with a Porsche 997 that had a battery actuated frunk, but the battery is under the frunk! Anyway, Porsche did provide a work around.

I would look in the manual and call your dealer and see if there is a procedure for unlocking the steering if the battery dies while locked. It may be one of those things that's described in the service manual or a bulletin.

But I would guess most likely a loss of actuator state issue, or possibly rats/mice.

Its never happened before but anything is possible, hopefully I can get some mates to help move the bike, I can get the plastics off then and look a little deeper and trace the lives I have got and see how far they go, I was dreading rodent damage but I think I prefer that over keyless ignition module fitted and programmed by the dealer.

before you do that, call the dealer and look in the manual to see if its just a loss of state issue since the battery died while locked. It could be a theft prevention measure!

Hi, the dealers in the uk aren’t helpful at all, whatever you call them with they say they’ve never heard of before, tell you to bring it in for diagnostics or offer to collect it, the manual doesn’t mention anything about issues after long term storage without power

Start with easy first, double check battery is correctly installed. Could be press to turn on module on the steering head. Mine went out and no matter what bike would not even power on. Had to be replaced and dealer has to do it.
