Excel Cycle Werks "Front Shelf"

I stumbled across this small machine shop while looking for exhaust extensions for my '12 R1200GS. I saw this in their products:

"Excel Front Shelf Bracket
Fits R1200GS Oil Head Years 2005 – 2013
(design is year specific – two versions shown)
$75 USD
Add a shelf to hold those "extra parts" needed to get on down the road - as stated, these are model year specific and are available with or without shown equipment holes."

Front shelf? What is this and where in the front of a GS does it go? And wht would one need such a shelf? To hold a Big Mac?

I goes right above the odometer, it's used for attaching control panel stuff (radar detector, GPS, CB, more switches, etc.)

Basically its used to hold technology of the day. Now a cell phone in a wireless charging mount does about 1000X more.
