First service GSA1250

439 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Sniper89
In the process of contemplating a new GSA1250, I was told at the dealer to do the engine brake in to 600 miles and have the first service. But they can do one as soon as 350 miles. I was quoted $400
I am planning a trip the first week of July, and I do not know if I will have time between now and then to get the miles on it and then get the service done.
Suggestions/Ideas?

You're leaving 50cc on the table. You should demand all 1250 of 'em. :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to B-ring M-ore W-allet.

The 600 mile service is basically an engine oil and final drive oil change plus inspection, good to do at dealer to keep in good graces for warranty. Could easily be done at a dealer along the way of your trip if you planned it out.

Personally I’d want to get 600 miles in anyway to shake down the bike, confirm ergos are right and determine if you need an aftermarket seat, risers, windscreen deflector, etc, etc prior to the trip. Could be miserable trip if you butt is in pain or you have a headache from wind buffeting.
The bike is optioned out very well and I have a month to get the miles in. One test ride of about 20 miles has me convinced that from what I am coming from is 100% more comfortable both in riding position and the dealer has already stated as part of the new owner ordination that they would work out any ergos for my build and comfort. But your right that I should get as many miles in that I can before the trip. I got a month to do that. I am already s opting out dealerships on the way however we have a schedule to keep and I would have contact the dealer beforehand to schedule an on trip service. Thanks for all the input you have given me the help I need to get me going in the right direction. The biggest concern now is getting use to the weight displacement and getting comfortable with a new bike. With a 30” inseam the struggle is real lol my zH2 is tall and my concours 14 is better but the GSA is much taller even with the seat adjustment on the lowest setting. Maybe they have a lower seat.

Ergonomics of the GS is pretty good out of the box.

There is a low BMW seat but almost all would recommend an aftermarket low seat from Sargent, Saddleman or Touratech. Seats are definitely a personal preference deal.

If you can't do it yourself schedule the service with enough time to ride it once before trip for a shakedown in case dealer screwed something up. Then give it you best shot for 600 miles and I would hope you could at least get 350.
Being comfortable at 20 miles and being comfortable after 10 hours in the saddle are many times very different things. I can tolerate almost any bike for 20 miles I cannot many bikes after 8 or 10 hours in the saddle.

Big mistake lighting out before thoroughly shaking down the bike and getting it tweaked to where you need.

You have some leeway in getting the initial service completed - true. I actually pre-scheduled mine for 2 weeks or so after I picked up the bike, and had closer to 1000 miles than 600 miles on the bike.

Per the instructions, I didn't just do long mileage runs at a steady 60 mph. However, had so much fun on the bike, compared with the F800 GT, that it wasn't hard to get in the miles. Had close to 100 just taking the long way back from the dealer :) Throw in a couple hours here and there after work, plus a decently long ride over the weekend. Bam! 850 miles!

NOTE - I too was concerned about the seat height, and ended up with a factory-lowered chassis. Got a little over 10,000 miles on the bike and now having ridden both the factory low and the regular models, I'd be inclined to go with the regular and not the factory lowered, as the regular seemed a little better at handling bumps and stuff.

I would try and get the 600 mile service in before your trip, nothing worse than worrying about getting a service completed while on the road. Just time wasted when you could be riding. I would use the bbike to commute to work if possible and I would plan a couple 100-200 mile days trips on weekends and before you know it you'll be at or above 600 miles.
I have a factory low seat on my GS. Zero complaints. I can ride all day long with it.

My service dept told me "at least" 600 miles but closer to 1000 miles would be better.
