„Geländesport“ is the German word for offroad motorcycling. Supposedly, according to German language sources, this was the original meaning, which makes sense considering this was a motorcycle meant to compete in Paris-Dakar.

Later some marketing folks apparently decided that “Gelände/Straße“ was more accurately targeting their customer demographic as these bikes surged in popularity and many customers especially in Europe had no intention or opportunity to take these bikes off pavement.

I upvote Perazzi‘s answer, however.

OTOH, the Wikipedia article on BMW GS says that
the G/S name was changed to GS with the S meaning "Sport" rather than "Straße"
.

„Gelände“ has several meanings, most notably "terrain", "ground", and "open country". In the context of the BMW name, the best translation is "open country" in the sense of "off road".
