Heated grips question

897 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  geoffmurray5955
I have an early 2021 1250 GSA which has 3 stage heated grips - i.e. 1, 2 and off. I understand that some later bikes have a 5 stage arrangement. My query is - can the 3 stage be upgraded to the 5 stage via a software upgrade or can this not be done? Thanks.

You would think that would be an easy software fix but BMW doesn't work that way. I was among the first to get the new 1600 when it came out in 2011 (2012 model). The next model year (2013) they had a digital speedometer in the center. That would have been an easy software fix to add it to the early models but nope. I wanted it so bad and would have happly paid for it. Kinda pisses me off. The analog numbers were so small I couldn't see them with my old eyes.
Based on what I see at work it likely depends on two things. First is whether the hardware is compatible. Potential exists the switch, wiring or grips changed and is not compatible (parts catalog could verify). Second is whether BMW has the software to change from the old to new. They may have updated software in new design but not made it possible to upgrade previous off/1/2 settings to 5 stage.

Hopefully a dealer can check with BMW Motorrad to answer the question and get a direct answer.
Thanks for the comments guys - much appreciated. I will ask the question when my bike goes back to the stealer for the next service and the driveshaft drain install.
Thank you - I have been in touch with Ben and will follow up with him. Have you used his services yourself?

No I haven't used him myself but I have had a fair bit of discussion with him in the past. I was going to get the core sports screen installed on my GS but eventually changed my mind. However, i have heard nothing bad about his services. I did ask him what happened if the update crashed during installation and he said it just reverted back to original.
